I typed this up last night on my phone app but my phone decided to
reboot for some reason and I lost it all. Boo. So here I go again.
Sorry if it’s not as awesome as the first draft!
New Years is always an interesting time for me. Lots of people making
goals, which is a great thing. But it makes me sad that many of those
people will lose focus of their goals within the first couple weeks.
Some may make it a month. Only a small percentage will actually make
the changes they desire.
This is OK though. It’s okay to not succeed the first time. It’s okay
to have to adjust, modify, and try again. Just because something
doesn’t go as planned the FIRST time does not mean the next step is to
give up. That seems to be the mentality. It’s all-or-nothing for many.
We want to be perfect, make the exact changes we set out to make as
the ball dropped to 2013, and never look back at our old lives. It
doesn’t usually work out that way, no matter how hard we try. No one
is perfect and we all make mistakes. We should all resolve to try,
try, and try again.
I’m not really a New Year’s Resolution type of gal. Yes, I make goals
at the new year. I also make goals every month, every week, or
sometimes on a random Tuesday at 2pm. I resolve to change whenever the
mood strikes, whenever it makes sense for my life. I don’t necessarily
wait until the new year. The new year is a good opportunity because it
gives us a chance to examine the last year, to acknowledge our
accomplishments and to determine what we could have done differently
if given the chance. The new year is our chance to do things
differently this time around. It just doesn’t make sense, to me, to
not make those changes whenever we realize that they are necessary.
Resolutions, or goals/plans as I call them, can be a positive thing
for us whether we make them on January 1 or December 31 or any day in
between. There is no need to wait to make our lives better!
But, I digress. I hope my friends and family will make resolutions,
goals, plans, what-have-you, and that they will succeed. And, of
course, by succeed, I don’t necessarily mean the very first time they
try. I hope they keep their heads up, try over and over again, modify
their plans as needed, and succeed along the way. Success is in the
eye of the beholder, much like beauty.
As for me, I first reflect on the year that has passed before making
me new year goals.
I’m not going to lie, 2012 was a tough year. I’m not going to go into
much detail but those of you who know me well are aware of this. It
was an amazing year at the same time. For every challenge (and there
for a lot), there were many many awesome experiences. Most of them
revolved around the experience of watching a baby transform into a
toddler. It seems that my baby has become a toddler in the last month
as she has finally become a good walker (at home, since she won’t walk
in public yet as that means I would have to put her down – darn you,
separation anxiety). She is so smart and has such a personality. And,
of course, she’s adorable so there’s no way to look at her and not
smile. All the sleep-deprivation and crying (by her AND me) has been
worth it to watch her grow and to be her mom. I’m also lucky to have
such an amazing husband with whom I have been through the good and the
bad. I couldn’t ask for a better guy. As for my non-family-related
experiences, I have been continued to run (650 miles in 2012),
including 2 half marathons and a few smaller races. I did not PR but I
did the best I could under the circumstances. I was determined to stay
in shape, at least maintain my fitness, after becoming a mom and I
feel that I have succeeded. Yay for that! I haven’t been as healthy in
regards to food as I would have liked. I’ve resorted to boxed and
processed meals. That needs to change for sure and it will, don’t
worry.
So, what are my goals for 2013?
1) Run 1000 miles. Complete 3 races of the half marathon or more. A
marathon would be AWESOME but I don’t know if I’m quite ready yet. I
need to figure out how to get my abs to come back together first since
they are still a little separated from pregnancy (ugh). I would love
to set a PR for the half marathon distance.
2) Cleaner eating, more veggies/fruits, well-balanced meals. I’m going
to give myself the okay for one lean cuisine meal a day at work since
I don’t think I’ll always have time to have something more fresh. I’d
love to try 2 new recipes a month to start. I got lazy with food, like
I said, so I need to work on this.
3) Complete the wedding and honeymoon scrapbooks (I know, we’ve been
married 3.5 years now…). Work on them on Monday nights after the
munchkin goes to bed since that is the best time to try to focus. I
can even catch up on my tv shows while I do it.
4) Try something new from Pinterest (other than recipes, see #2) once
a month. It will be fun! My first adventure is already pinned on my
2013 board: “This Janurary, why not start the year with an empty jar
and fill it with notes about good things that happen. Then, on New
Years Eve, empty it and see what awesome stuff happened that year.” I
have already started but I still need to get the jar!
So there you have it. Those are my goals. Pretty basic but, for me,
that’s what new year’s goals/resolutions are supposed to be. Each day,
week, month, I will modify and specify as I need to in order to
achieve my goals.
